Claiborne was born in 1704 in Charles County, Maryland.1   Claiborne's father was John Semmes and his mother was Mary Higdon.  His paternal grandparents were Marmaduke Semmes and Fortune Watson; his maternal grandparents were John Higdon and Millicent. He had a brother and three sisters, named Thomas, Anne, Rebecca and Mary.  He was the second oldest of the five children.  He died at the age of 46 in 1750.1
