James Simmons 
James was born in 1839 in ,Hawkins, Tennessee.1 James' father was James G. Simmons and his mother was Sarah Gillenwater. His paternal grandparents were James Simmons and Elizabeth Gillenwaters; his maternal grandparents were Thomas Gillenwater and Mary Mallory Wilkins. He had four brothers and five sisters, named John, Thomas, William, Clay, Mary, Nancy, Rachel, Martha and Sarah. He was the fifth oldest of the ten children.-
