Lettitia was born in 1841 in ,Bourbon, Kentucky.1 Lettitia's father was Henry Clay and her mother was Mary T. Chadwell. Her paternal grandparents were Henry Clay and Margaret Helm; her maternal grandparents were George Chadwell and Alice. She had two brothers and two sisters, named George, John Walker, Sarah E. and Ann R.. She was the third oldest of the five children. She had five half-brothers and two half-sisters, and also a half-sibling of unknown gender, named Joseph, George, John W., Samuel Scott, Joseph H., Letitia, Margaret H. and Clay.-
