Joseph was born in 1833 in ,Bourbon, Kentucky.1 Joseph's father was Henry Clay and his mother was Olivia Bedinger. His paternal grandparents were Henry Clay and Margaret Helm; his maternal grandparents were George Michael Bedinger and Henrietta. He had two brothers and a sister, and also a sibling of unknown gender, named George, John W., Letitia and Clay. He was the second oldest of the five children. He had four half-brothers and four half-sisters, named Samuel Scott, Joseph H., George, John Walker, Margaret H., Sarah E., Ann R. and Lettitia.-
