Susannah was born about 1780 in ,Henry, Virginia.1 Susannah's father was James J. Charles and her mother was Tabitha Senter. Her paternal grandparents were James Charles and Sarah; her maternal grandparents were Stephen Senter and Susannah Tandy. She had seven brothers and four sisters, named James, Oliver, Hiram, Stephen K., John, Joel, Solomon, Cynthia, Nancy, Elizabeth and Tabitha. She was the fifth oldest of the twelve children.-
