WILLIAM THE LION, KING OF was born in 1143 in Huntingdon, Huntingdonshire, England . WILLIAM THE LION, KING OF 's father was Henry, Earl of Huntingdon, Prince of Scotland and his mother was Ada de Warenne . His paternal grandparents were DAVID I "THE SAINT", KING OF Scotland and Matilda, Queen of Scotland. He was an only child. He died at the age of 71 on December 4th, 1214 in Stirling Castle, Stirlingshire, England .General Notes
William adopted the Lion Rampant as his coat of arms, hence the nickname. He joined Henry II's sons in rebellion against their father. William was captured at the Battle of Alnwick in 1174 and imprisoned in France among other places until he agreed to do homage to Henry II as his feudal overlord. William surrendered some key castles as well, including Edinburgh and Sterling. With the accession of Richard I, however, William regained his independent Scottish kingdom, paying a sum of money to Richard, who needed to finance his crusade. William was a pious man and a great patron of the Scottish church. He founded Arbroath Abbey in Angus and is buried there.
