DAVID I "THE SAINT", KING OF was born about 1080 in Scotland. DAVID I "THE SAINT", KING OF 's father was MALCOLM III CANMORE, KING OF Scotland and his mother was ST. MARGARET AETHELING, QUEEN OF Scotland. His paternal grandparents were DUNCAN I "The Gracious" MacCRINAN, KING OF SCOTLAND and Sybil Biornsson, of Northumbria ; his maternal grandparents were Edward "The Exile", Prince of Aetheling and Agatha, of Hungary . He was an only child. He died on May 24th, 1153 in Carlisle, Cumberland, England .General Notes
David spent much of his early life at the court of his brother-in-law Henry I. He succeeded his brother Alexander I as king in 1124. He tried to aid his niece, the Empress Matilda, in her wars with King Stephen, but was defeated at the Battle of the Standard near Northallerton in 1138. David admitted a goodly number of Norman aristocrats into Scotland and reorganized the kingdom along Norman lines, establishing the sheriffdom and developing the justiciary system. Some of the Norman families who took root in Scotland at this time included the Bruces, the Stewarts, and the Comyns.
David I was famous for his piety. A great benefactor to the church, he established many religious houses. He was succeeded by his grandson Malcolm IV.
