A weak ruler and one of England's most hated kings, Aethelred II lost his kingdom to the Danes. His nickname, "the Unready," is derived from the Old English "unrede," meaning that he lacked advice. When he began his reign, he was suspected of murdering his half-brother King Edward the Martyr. In 980 the Danes renewed their raids on England after a 25-year truce, until they had taken over the entire country. Aethelred fled to Normandy.
His son Edmund II Ironside would briefly recover the kingdom and lose it agaiin to King Canute. Aethelred's other son Edward the Confessor then regained the kingdom.
