Willis was born in 1817 in North Carolina. Willis' father was Willis Spears. His paternal grandparents were Kindred Spears and Elizabeth Jones. He had a brother and three sisters, named Kindred, Caroline, Sarah and Mary E.. He was the second youngest of the five children. Willis is no longer alive.-
