Willis was born about 1772 in North Carolina. Willis' father was Kindred Spears and his mother was Elizabeth Jones. His paternal grandparents were James Spears and Elizabeth Coker; his maternal grandfather was James Jones. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Nathan, William, Sarah and Elizabeth. He was the second oldest of the five children.-
