Nancy Ann was born in 1783 in Halifax County, North Carolina. Nancy Ann's father was Samuel Spears and her mother was Sarah Spears. Her paternal grandmother was Rosina Spears; her maternal grandparents were Kindred Spears and Elizabeth Jones. She had four brothers and two sisters, named David, Lazarus, Jesse, William, Phereba and Lucy. She was the third oldest of the seven children. She had two half-brothers and four half-sisters, and also a half-sibling of unknown gender, named John, William, Spears, Matilda, Spears, Matilda and Spears.-
