His paternal grandparents were Skelton and Ann; his maternal grandparents were Joseph Roberts and Elizabeth Clemmons. He had seven brothers and two sisters, named Joseph, Alexander, William, Thomas, James, Reuben, Abraham Carter, Nancy and Mary Elizabeth. He was the third oldest of the ten children.-
