John Childers was born in 1897 in Virginia.  John Childers' father was Samuel Augustus Shipley and his mother was Sarah Elizabeth Gilley.  His paternal grandparents were John Childers Shipley and Nancy Martitia Green. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Napoleon Benjamin, Loyd Cleveland, Ballard Henry, Garland David, Orena Bell and Martha.  He was the second youngest of the seven children.
