Ballard Henry was born in 1893 in Virginia.  Ballard Henry's father was Samuel Augustus Shipley and his mother was Sarah Elizabeth Gilley.  His paternal grandparents were John Childers Shipley and Nancy Martitia Green. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Napoleon Benjamin, Loyd Cleveland, John Childers, Garland David, Orena Bell and Martha.  He was the third youngest of the seven children.
