Nancy was born in 1841 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Nancy's father was John Pilant and her mother was Mahala. Her paternal grandfather was Joseph Pilant. She had four brothers and four sisters, named James, William, John, Joseph, Orlena, Elizabeth, Susan and Mariah Jane. She was the fifth oldest of the nine children.-
