Mariah Jane was born in 1846 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Mariah Jane's father was John Pilant and her mother was Mahala. Her paternal grandfather was Joseph Pilant. She had four brothers and four sisters, named James, William, John, Joseph, Orlena, Elizabeth, Susan and Nancy. She was the third youngest of the nine children.-
