James was born in 1833 in , , Alabama. James' father was John Pilant and his mother was Mahala. His paternal grandfather was Joseph Pilant. He had three brothers and five sisters, named William, John, Joseph, Orlena, Elizabeth, Susan, Nancy and Mariah Jane. He was the oldest of the nine children.-
