Nancy was born about 1791 in , Of, North Carolina. Nancy's father was Thomas McLain and her mother was Elizabeth Doty. She had seven brothers and two sisters, named Daniel, Joseph, George, John, Clark, Murrell, Jonathan, Deborah and Elizabeth. She was the oldest of the ten children.
