Joseph was born in 1795 in Of, Hawkins, Tennessee.  Joseph's father was Thomas McLain and his mother was Elizabeth Doty. He had six brothers and three sisters, named Daniel, George, John, Clark, Murrell, Jonathan, Nancy, Deborah and Elizabeth.  He was the third oldest of the ten children.
