Jonathan was born about 1815 in , Of, Tennessee.  Jonathan's father was Thomas McLain and his mother was Elizabeth Doty. He had six brothers and three sisters, named Daniel, Joseph, George, John, Clark, Murrell, Nancy, Deborah and Elizabeth.  He was the youngest of the ten children.
