George was born about 1798 in , Of, North Carolina.  George's father was Thomas McLain and his mother was Elizabeth Doty. He had six brothers and three sisters, named Daniel, Joseph, John, Clark, Murrell, Jonathan, Nancy, Deborah and Elizabeth.  He was the fourth oldest of the ten children.
