Orpha was born in 1840 in , Hawkins, Tennessee.  Orpha's father was William Cope and her mother was Margaret Baker.  Her paternal grandparents were William Cope and Nancy. She had six brothers and two sisters, named Madison, Marshall, Harrison, Elbert, Larkin, Jesse, Martha and Nancy.  She was the third oldest of the nine children.
