Martha was born in 1843 in , Hawkins, Tennessee.  Martha's father was William Cope and her mother was Margaret Baker.  Her paternal grandparents were William Cope and Nancy. She had six brothers and two sisters, named Madison, Marshall, Harrison, Elbert, Larkin, Jesse, Orpha and Nancy.  She was the fifth oldest of the nine children.
