Nancy was born in 1847 in , Hawkins, Tennessee.  Nancy's father was William Cope and her mother was Margaret Baker.  Her paternal grandparents were William Cope and Nancy. She had six brothers and two sisters, named Madison, Marshall, Harrison, Elbert, Larkin, Jesse, Orpha and Martha.  She was the second youngest of the nine children.
