Joseph Martin was born on January 9th, 1852 in , , Arkansas. Joseph Martin's father was James Charles and his mother was Mary Jane Hooten. His paternal grandparents were Stephen K. Charles and Mary Knowles. He had four brothers and three sisters, named John, Felix A., Stephen, James R., Mary, Tabitha and Mary Jane. He was the fourth youngest of the eight children. He had two half-brothers and two half-sisters, named James T., William T., Mary E. and Mattie F.. He died at the age of 72 on July 3rd, 1924 in Jack, Texas.-
