Stephen K. was born about 1783 in , Henry, Virginia. Stephen K.'s father was James J. Charles and his mother was Tabitha Senter. His paternal grandparents were James Charles and Sarah; his maternal grandparents were Stephen Senter and Susannah Tandy. He had six brothers and five sisters, named James, Oliver, Hiram, John, Joel, Solomon, Cynthia, Susannah, Nancy, Elizabeth and Tabitha. He was the sixth youngest of the twelve children. He died in 1850 in , , Tennessee.-
