Alexander was born on April 15th, 1838 in Lawrence, Tennessee.1   Alexander's father was John Henry Washington Spain and his mother was Martha Roena Armstrong.  His paternal grandparents were John Spain and Hannah Proctor. He had two brothers and three sisters, named James, John Wesley, Mary Jane, Huldah and Amanda.  He was the second oldest of the six children. He had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named George Frank, Marion Francis and Caroline M.  He died at the age of 82 on January 4th, 1921 in Booneville, Prentiss County, Mississippi.1
