Melvin Hicks were married Jun. 2 1918 at Vance Texas under the old
brush arbor. Their marriage was solemnized by brother Louis Pearl, a
Holiness Preacher. Grace Albright was the maid of honor and Nelson
Hicks, Melvin's brother was best man. Lela's wedding gown was made by
her aunt Betty Merritt Billings and was white taffeta trimmed with
lace. She wore a white hat with streamers and blue flowers. Her
shoes were twelve dollar white pumps and she wore white gloves. Lela
was give in marriage by her father A.N. Welch. Their marriage license
was obtained in Leakey, Real County, Texas. Lela and Melvin received
one hundred nannys each from their fathers. This started Melvin out
in the ranching business and Lela was busy setting up house keeping.
Their first child was a boy, born in April 1919 and there was eight
more children to follow, making a total of nine. Seven sons and two
daughters. Melvin died April 24, 1975 in the Uvalde Memorial Hospital
at the age of 78 years. He is buried in the Hillcrest Memorial
Cemetery in Uvalde, Uvalde County, Texas.
