Narrative

Alias:<ALIA> Hog /Welch/
[byrne.ftw]
!Ezra Welch was born Jan. 18, 1907 and Sammie Ophelia Allison was born
June 10, 1910. They were married in Leakey, Real Co. Texas on Nov 27,
1927 by a Justice of the Peace Judge. They lived in Rocksprings, Texas
until 1941. Then they moved to a ranch on Dry Creek and lived there
until the house burned. After that they moved to a ranch south of
Camp Wood, Texas. In 1944 they moved to the ranch at Bull Head (about
six miles above Vance, Texas). Those were the "good ole days" for the
family. Sammie had her garden and canned all sorts of good things.
Ezra (Hog) ranched, fished, hunted and farmed. Hog, the name that
Ezra went by all his life was given to him by Albert Wells, a store
owner and rancher at Vance. Hog got his name because he ate so much.
In the pecan bottoms, Hog would thrash the tall trees and Sammie and
the children, Ben Jack and Winnie Lee would pick up the pecans.
Needless to say Sammie always picked up more than both the young ones.
One day Hog thrashed a real-real tall pecan tree. When he came down
he said "by-damn, there aint NO way I'll ever climb that tree again".
Then he noticed his tobacco hanging on one of the tallest limbs. Sure
enough, he climbed that tree again. They lived close to the river and
Hog and Sammie would take Ben Jack and Winnie Lee down to the swimming
hole every day. In 1947 they moved across the mountain to Uncle A.P.
Allison's ranch, on the Barksdale Rocksprings highway, and lived there
until Sammie died in 1959. Sammie is buried in the Vance Cemetery,
behind the little white Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School.
Hog was a Deacon in this same church that they attended for many
years. Hog, and his brother, Oliver (Bud) Welch, married sisters,
Sammie and Nona Allison. At the present time Hog lives in Uvalde,
Texas with his wife, Nomie Creech Ives Welch.
