! Ione Hicks was the seventh child of John and Zorah Ellen Dalton
Hicks. She was born September 3rd 1907 at Hackberry, Texas. Roy Mosley
was born April 25th 1906 at Lusk, Choctaw County, Alabama to William
Tolman and Frances Shirley Mosley. Roy and Ione met at a dance in
Franklin, Arizona at the Goodman Dance Pavilion. After a courtship,
they eloped to Lordsburg, New Mexico and were married by the Justice
of the Peace Judge. Ione said she did not hear a word the JP said, so
she wasn't ever sure she was married. The JP mumbled in a low tone
keeping his head down during the ceremony. Roy's cousin was a
witness. He was Roy's and Ione's children's beloved "Uncle Bob"
Tindle. He was a bootlegger at the time and on the trip to Lordsburg,
they all had to stop and pick up every empty bottle they saw so "Uncle
Bob" could use it in his business. After Roy's and Ione's marriage,
they took up a homestead on Grey Horse Creek at the foot of the Horse
Shoe Mountains near Franklin, Arizona. They stayed there through most
of the depression and it is a wonder that they didn't starve to death,
but Ione said they always had plenty to eat. By the time they moved
off of the homestead there wasn't a rabbit left alive on the entire
section of land. One time when Ione's brother, Nelson was visiting,
there was an old doe deer wandered into their yard. They had only one
old rusty cartridge for the rifle, so Nelson was elected to shoot the
deer as he was an excellent shot. He took his shoes off so he could
sneak up on the doe. He went tiptoeing through the cactus and rocks
and got right up on the deer, and as luck would have it, he missed
with the last cartridge the family had. They didn't have deer meat
that day. Roy ad Ione then moved to a farm in Franklin and Ione still
lives there. Roy raced horses for several years. He had a horse that
he raised from a quarter horse stallion and one of their farm work
plugs. This horse was named "Pumpkin" and was a throwback to racing
blood somewhere in his pedigree, and was never beaten in a race. Too
bad that was before horse racing got to be good money. Roy died
February 13, 1964 at the age of 57 years and is buried in Franklin,
Arizona. He was proceeded in death by two of his children, Roy Banks,
who died July 3, 1939 and Sammie Jean, who died November 10, 1943.
