! Nelson Hicks was born in the old Hicks home in Hackberry, Texas
on March 17 1899 and Edna Merritt was born in Rocksprings, Texas on
October 26, 1906. They were married in the Hicks Home in Hackberry on
January 1st, 1921 by W. S. Smitkey. He was Justice of the the Peace
Judge of Edwards County, Texas. Their marriage license was obtained
in Leakey, Real Co., Texas. Their first two children, Wayne and Tink,
were born in the same house Nelson was born in. Nelson and Edna lived
until about the first part of 1928 in Hackberry and then moved to
Arizona where they lived on a ranch for a while. After that they
moved to Duncan, Arizona. During the depression Nelson sheared goats
and sheep in that area. He and his brother, Carl bought a pool hall
but it did not do very well. Nelson and his family moved to Carlsbad,
New Mexico where he went to work in the potash mines from which he
retired. He died October 4th, 1984 in Carlsbad, New Mexico and is
buried in Carlsbad.
