Samuel Goode No. 76 of Charlotte Co., VA settled first in Mecklenburg
Co., afterwards in Prince Edward Co., whence he moved in 1789 or 1790 to
Charlotte Co., and settled upon a small stream called Cub Creek, not far
from the noted meeting-house called Rough Creek Church.
He was a planter, owning a few slaves, and an active man, fond of horses
and of field sports, especially fox hunting. His wife was a woman of good
intellect, and of a very positive, self-reliant nature. She was probably
born at "Porto Bello" or in King and Queen County.
Samuel Goode and his wife were people of sterling character,and were
among the earliest in Virginia, and indeed in America, to become
identified with the Methodist Church, which was established on this side
of the Atlantic soon after their marriage*
*Methodism was established in Virginia in 1772 by Rev. Robert Williams. A
great revivial took place in 1776, and in a single year 1993 members were
added in this State to the membership of the church in the United States.
The number added in other states was 54. The total membership in the
United States was 4379 south of the Potomac and 2987 north, with 36
preachers, 18 of whom were sent to Virginia. In 1777, there were 498
members in Mecklenburg Co., 620 in Amelia Co., and 186 in Charlotte Co.;
so it will be seen that Virginia was the stronghold of American Methodism

EXCURSUS - THE COLLIER FAMILY OF VIRGINIA
The first of the name in America was Samuel Collier, who came from
England in 1607 with the first company of colonists, and who, being a
youth, acted as "page" to Capt. John Smith, whom he accompanied in his
exploring excursions into the unknown parts of Virginia.
