Burwell Goode removed at the age of 20 to Ohio, in company with his
brothers, and settled with them at Waynesville, where he lived, until his
death, upon a portion of the original tract already referred to. He was a
soldier in the war of 1812, serving for more than thirty days, his
company commander being
John McClean, afterward Chief Justice of the United States. He was an
active, energetic farmer, a communicant and class-leader of the Methodist
Church, and for many years one of the magistrates of his county. In the
records of the county still stands a minute of one of his decisions,
which was as unusual as it was pertinent. Two men having traded horses,
each claimed to have been defrauded; the squire's verdict was that they
should trade back.
He was six feet tall, of large frame, with a complexion inclined to
swarthiness, and strong, positive cast of countenance; of a disposition
passionate, though not revengeful, and easily placated. His industry was
proverbial, and he loved hard work for its own sake. His religious
convictions were controlling, and he was a diligent student of the Bible,
of which he had minute knowledge. He was courteous and hospitable, and
delighted in conversation, especially the discussion and argument of
