Amanda was born about 1846.  Amanda's father was Gilbert Schoonover and her mother was Jane Shoemaker. She had four brothers and four sisters, named Benjamin, Thomas, Robert, William, Catherine, Julia, Levina and Lorin.  She was the second youngest of the nine children.
