Peter was born in 1663 in Newbury, Essex, MA.1 Peter's father was Peter Cheney and his mother was Hannah Noyes. His paternal grandparents were John Cheney and Martha Parrat; his maternal grandparents were Nicholas Noyes and Mary Cutting. He had seven brothers and six sisters, named John, Nicholas, Nathaniel, Nathaniel, Nathaniel, Eldad, Ichabod, Huldah, Mary, Martha, Jemina, Hanna and Lydia. He was the oldest of the fourteen children.-
