Matilda was born in 1835 in , Jackson, WV.1 Matilda's father was George Casto and her mother was Sarah Aurs. Her paternal grandparents were David Casto and Margaret Elizabeth Province. She had six brothers and five sisters, named John G, George, Nicholas, David G, James Cunningham, Joel, Mary Magdalene, Phoebe, Sarah, Elizabeth and Louisa. She was the youngest of the twelve children. She had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Abram G and Margaret.-
