Narrative

SUMMARY;

Robert Wynne acted as security for Edmond Fountaine in 1664. The security was against Fountaine's Estate. Being an alien (he was a French Huguenot) his descendant (John Fountaine) could not inherit, so when Edmond died, if he died intestate which it seems he did, the land reverted to Robert Wynne as Edmond's security. When Edmond died, Robert Wynne had pre-deceased him. (Will dated 1 July 1675; proved 15 August 1678 - VA. MAG. SIV, p. 173). So, Mrs Wynne would have inherited Fountaine's land by dower right. She married William Byrd and after John Fountain, son of Edmond became naturalized in 1692 he was then allowed to own land. Edmond was dead by 1695; he might have died in 1692 or thereabouts and John decided to become naturalized at that time. In 1695 Mrs. Byrd relinquished her dower right to certain lands in the Jordans to John Fountain. Then, by 1714 , he had died, and being only a denizen, or naturalized inhabitant without full rights of citizenship, his son could not inherit, so the land reverted again to the Wynne family. In 1717, the next John (still without full rights of citizenship and unable to act on his own alone) along with another robert Wynne, received land for importation. Then later, this John was seen in N.C. - he died there and Henry was appointed his administrator. Henry had a son, our William. So we have - Edmond, John, John the Elder, Henry and William and as the beginning of this lineage, more than likely John Fountaine who came to America in 1635.

NOTE: Following is an interesting notation in the Carles City County, Court Orders, referred to previously, dated 3 Feb. 1691:

"An Indian girl named Joan belonging to Jno. Fountain is adjudged to be 7 years old."

This summary was written by Virginia Fountain Sellers Oliver a descendant of William's son John by Elizabeth Coleman.

Much of the material that substanuates the material in this summary can be found under John Fountaine the son of Edmond and the father of John the Elder.
