Luther's father was William H. (Billy) Smith and his mother was Susan Frances (Fannie) Summer. His maternal grandparents were John Adam Summer and Mariah Martin. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Eddie, Harry, Walter, Mary Ruth, Roselle and Summer.-
