Owain Gwynedd ap Gruffydd was born about 1100 in of Caernarvonshire, Wales.1 Owain Gwynedd ap Gruffydd's father was Gruffydd ap Cynan King of North Wales and his mother was Angharad verch Owain. His paternal grandparents were Conan Prince of North Wales and Rhanullt ingen Olaf; his maternal grandparents were Owain ap Edwin Earl of Cornwall and Morwyl verch Ednywain. He had a sister named Susanna. He was the younger of the two children. He died in November 1170 in Caernarvonshire, Wales.1 General Notes

Yale p. 40: During King Stephen's reign of 17 years in
England, he left Wales much to
itself and Owain materially added to the resources of his
country & re-occupied several districts, which the Welsh had
lost in former years. In the meantime however, he and
Cadwaladr quarreld and the latter fled to England. Also during
these years (C25) Rhys ap Gruffydd, a son of Gruffydd ap Rhun,
who was son of Rhys ap Tewdwr, had won several comparatively
important engagements and successes in the south.
