Dave's father was George A. Metts and his mother was Edith A. Boland. His paternal grandparents were George Metts and Elizabeth Sease; his maternal grandparents were Joseph Boland and Elizabeth H. Shealy. He had three brothers and three sisters, named William, Asa Leland, Frank, Corrie Ella, Elvira Elizabeth and Katie. He had four half-brothers and three half-sisters, named Asa, Dave, Frank, William, Corrie, Elvie and Katie.-
