Bernhard was born in 0797 in of Vermandois, Normandy, France.1 Bernhard's father was Pepin I de Lombardy King of Italy and his mother was daughter of the Franks. His paternal grandparents were Charlemagne Holy Roman Emp and Hildegarde von Vinzgau; his maternal grandfather was Bernard Duke of Franks. He was an only child.
