There is controversy over the date of his birth. The D.A.R. Patriot Index has it in 1755. The tax records of Dinwiddie County show Jesse Grigg II paying tax levy on Burwell Grigg III in the 1780's, indicating that Burwell III was under 21 and over 16, probably born about 1763.
Burwell Grigg III is said to have settled on the west side of the "First Broad River" in Lawdale, Rutehrford County, North Carolina. His wife, Sabra Elam, was the daughter of Joel and Phebe Elam.
