Bannister was born in 1757.1 Bannister's father was Jesse Grigg and his mother was Nancy Webb. His paternal grandparents were Abner Grigg and Mary Ford. He had seven brothers and two sisters, named Lewis, Abner, Burwell, William Grigg, Frederick, Burwell, Woodford, Francis and Betsy.
