Gospatric Earl of Northumbria 
Gospatric was born about 1040 in Northumberland, England.1 Gospatric's father was Maldred MacCrinan and his mother was Edith of Northumbria. His paternal grandparents were Crinan MacDuncan Earl of Strathclyde and Bethoe (Beatrix) of Scotland; his maternal grandparents were Uchtred (Ughtred) Earl of Northumbria and Elfgifu of England. Received the lands of Dunbar & other parts of Lothian from King
Malcolm III.
Claimed earldom of Northumbria through his mother.
In a "nasty" dispute w/ William the Conqueror, he fled to
Scotland.
He took with him Edgar Atheling (the Saxon heir), & Edgar's
mother & sisters.
This included Margaret, later Queen of Malcolm III & canonized
as a saint.

England were combined. Cospatrick (a.k.a. Gospatric) claimed
the right to the Earldom of Northumberland through his Mother,
AElgitha/Elgiva. After a nasty disagreement with William the
Conqueror, he fled north to his cousin's Kingdom in Scotland
taking with him Edgar Atheling(the Saxon heir), Edgar's mother
and sisters, one of which was Margaret, future Queen of Malcolm
III and later known as Saint Margaret of Scotland. It is in
Scotland where he is most reknowned as the First Earl & founder
of the House & clan of Dunbar.
