Grovie's father was Toland Craps and her mother was Adriann Adora Sease. Her maternal grandparents were Elias Starling Sease and Ella Jane Lewis. She had seven brothers and two sisters, named Dawson, Fred, Horace, Lever, Rafred, Refo, Rufus, Betha and Lala (Lola?).
