His paternal grandparents were Henry Winston Payne and Joanna Grace Roberts; his maternal grandparents were Samuel Thornton Pryor and Joanna Susan Payne. He had five brothers and six sisters, named Nobel B., (infant), Durward Graham, James Ashby, Samuel Winston, Ethelyne, Evelyn, Bernice J., Edith Eleanor, Thelma J. and Annabel Lee.
