Mary F. was born in 1837. Mary F.'s father was Thomas Clark Payne and her mother was Sallie Curd Flannagan. Her paternal grandparents were James Payne and Matilda Frances Dix; her maternal grandparents were James Flannagan and Mary Bowles. She had a brother and two sisters, and also a sibling of unknown gender, named William Joseph, Sallie Howard, Martha and ?. She was the second oldest of the five children.-
