William was born in 1735 in Washington Parish, Westmoreland Co., VA.  William's father was John Marshall and his mother was Elizabeth Markham.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Marshall and Martha Sherwood; his maternal grandfather was John Markham. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Thomas, John, Markham, Sarah, Ann, Mary, Margaret and Elizabeth.  He died at the age of 74 in 1809 in Eminence, Henry, KY.
