Markham was born in 1736 in Westmoreland Co., VA.  Markham's father was John Marshall and his mother was Elizabeth Markham.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Marshall and Martha Sherwood; his maternal grandfather was John Markham. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Thomas, John, William, Sarah, Ann, Mary, Margaret and Elizabeth.
