Henry was born in 1836 in Louisa, VA. Henry's father was Wilson Merrill Carter and his mother was Maria Bickley. His paternal grandparents were Henry Fauntleroy Carter and Mary Thompson; his maternal grandparents were Humphrey Bickley and Agnes Crews. He had two brothers and a sister, named Richard Wilson, Lewis M. and Susan E.. He was the second oldest of the four children. He had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named James Monroe, George D. and Theodosia Virginia.-
